She earned her Bachelor of Interior Design degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 2004 and became NCIDQ certified in 2007. Today, Shine is known for its thoughtful approach to design excellence, health, sustainability, and creating spaces that reflect each client’s lifestyle, story, and sense of well-being.

She currently serves as Chair of the ASID National Business Management Committee, where she contributes to conversations and resources that support interior designers in the growth and management of their firms.

Under Natalie and Stacey’s leadership, Shine Interior Design Studio has received multiple regional Excellence in Design Awards and is an ASID Focus National Award. Their expertise and work have been featured in local and national publications, including At Home in Arkansas, About You Magazine, Little Rock Soirée, Martha Stewart, Forbes.com, Southern Living, and Yahoo Life. Shine has also gained recognition for its focus on health and wellness in home design, an area Natalie sees as essential to the future of interiors.

Natalie lives in her hometown of Lonoke, Arkansas, with her husband, Ryan, and their three boys. She finds inspiration in family road trips, small towns, meaningful places, and the everyday rhythms of life. Her work is shaped by a belief that beautiful spaces should support real life — creating room for wellness, connection, creativity, and rest.

An industry collegue recently asked us a question we could not stop thinking about: "Do clients know the level of expertise they are actually getting?"

For many small firms that question names a real leadership challenge.  Clients may see a small team, but they may not fully understand the senior-level judgement, experience, and decision-making behind the work.

Whether you are a small design studio in a metro area or an experienced team trying to gain traction in smaller markets, there is a tension small, boutique firms know all too well. Small studios are often delivering the caliber of service, decision-making, and project complexity clients associate with larger firms, but without the same layers of staffing and administration.  When the value behind the work is not clearly understood the result can be over-explaining, blurred boundaries, wrong-fit inquiries, and a team stretched thin trying to prove themselves.

This roundtable is designed for owners and designers leading small teams that punch above their size.  The discussion will be facilitated by two owners who built one studio from very different professional paths:  one with executive corporate and commercial design experience, and one who started small and grew a residential practice into a full-service design studio.  Together, they will share how they have learned to deliver high-level service without sacrificicng the people responsible for providing it.

This conversation will focus on four connected areas:

Clear Lanes: How small teams can define who owns design direction, selections, documentation, procurement, client communication, and follow-through, instead of allowing everyone to touch every task.

Perception and Boundaries:  How unclear expectations can make a studio's senior-level expertise feel invisible, and why boundaries are not just about time management, but about protecting the value of the work.

Capacity:  How to assess whether the team can realistically take on the work in front of them before project load begins to affect morale, quality, or client care.

Presence as Protection: How outward-facing education, community involvement, and proof of expertise can help the right clients arrive with more trust and better expectations.  This is not about posting more or marketing louder.  It is about being known for the right things: showing up in your communities, local design, builder, and showrooms; teaching clients in a way that help them feel informed rather than sold to, and showing the judgement behind the finished design.  When a studio's presence communicates expertise before the first meeting, the team spends less energy re-explaining its value later.

Attendees will be invited into a candid working conversation using prompts such as:

  • Where is your team over-functioning?
  • What are you repeatedly explaining that your website, social presence, or client process would explain earlier?
  • Do clients understand the level of expertise before they are hiring you?
  • Where do boundaries need to be clearer so that the work remains sustainable?

Participants will leave with a simple working map for roles, boundaries, handoffs, capacity, and client-facing education.  The goal is a practical peer exchange that helps boutique firms deliver excellent service with mroe clarity, confidence, and protection for the team behind the work.
