Melissa Fields is the CEO and Principal Designer of Shades of Gray Design Studio, a San Antonio–based boutique interior design studio known for creating one-of-a-kind spaces with warmth, personality, and a strong point of view. With an intuitive ability to read rooms and the people who inhabit them, Melissa encourages clients to embrace bold design concepts that are balanced by understated comfort and livability throughout. Outside the studio, she spends her time with her family, in the air travelling (yes — she has a distinguished 20-year-career in the Air Force), or in search of the perfect pastry and bougie coffee spot.

Every successful design project depends on effective communication. Yet communication breakdowns remain one of the leading causes of project delays, misunderstandings, strained relationships, and unmet expectations.

This facilitated roundtable explores communication as a leadership skill rather than simply a business function. Drawing on principles developed during a 20-year career as a United States Air Force officer and applied within residential renovation projects, participants will examine practical approaches to communicating with clarity, building trust, managing expectations, and leading difficult conversations.

Through facilitated discussion, real-world scenarios, and peer-to-peer learning, attendees will explore common communication challenges with clients, contractors, consultants, and trade partners while sharing solutions and best practices from their own experiences.

Rather than presenting a one-size-fits-all approach, the roundtable encourages collaborative learning and meaningful conversation, allowing participants to leave with fresh perspectives, practical communication tools, and actionable ideas for improving collaboration across every stage of the design process.
