Why Great Projects Succeed: Lessons Learned from Real-World Design Challenges

Presentation

After more than 40 years as an interior designer, Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer, and owner of a successful design firm, I have learned that successful projects are not the ones without problems—they are the ones with teams that know how to solve them.

Every project encounters challenges. A paint color is mixed incorrectly. Hidden structural conditions are discovered during demolition. A manufacturer ships the wrong product. Materials arrive damaged. Contractors miss critical details. Product costs increase unexpectedly. Clients approve selections and later question their decisions. The unexpected is not the exception in our industry—it is the reality.

Through a series of candid residential and commercial case studies, this session explores the lessons learned from real projects and identifies the common factors that contribute to successful outcomes. Attendees will gain insight into challenges encountered on luxury residences, kitchen and bath renovations, hotels, banks, country clubs, and retail environments. Topics include specification errors, appliance and cabinetry coordination issues, stone fabrication challenges, contractor and subcontractor performance, scheduling conflicts, procurement and supply-chain disruptions, damaged shipments, budget pressures, tariff-related cost increases, code compliance, and client management.

Rather than focusing solely on what went wrong, the session examines how problems were solved and what systems were put in place to prevent them from occurring again. Case studies will demonstrate the importance of thorough documentation, detailed elevations, material verification, proper installation procedures, experienced tradespeople, manufacturer accountability, risk management, and effective communication among designers, contractors, suppliers, and clients.

Attendees will also explore examples of projects that exceeded expectations and discover why they succeeded. Common themes include clear communication, transparency, accountability, teamwork, trust, and mutual respect among all project stakeholders.

The session will address one of the most important yet least discussed realities of the design profession: our role as problem solvers. Whether coordinating complex kitchen installations, navigating structural surprises, managing client expectations, or resolving unforeseen construction issues, designers must constantly balance creativity, technical expertise, leadership, and decision-making.

Participants will leave with practical strategies they can immediately implement to reduce risk, improve project outcomes, strengthen relationships with clients and trades, and create systems that support long-term project success.

PRESENTATION APPROACH

This session will utilize a highly engaging case-study format built around real residential and commercial project experiences. Participants will be presented with actual project challenges, asked to evaluate possible solutions, and invited to share how they might respond before learning the final outcome and lessons learned.

PRESENTATION APPROACH: The presentation combines storytelling, project photography, lessons learned, audience participation, facilitated discussion, and Q&A. Attendees will compare different approaches to problem-solving, examine both successful and unsuccessful decisions, and identify practical strategies they can apply to their own projects.

Rather than focusing on theory, the session emphasizes real-world application and actionable takeaways. Audience members will leave with a framework for anticipating challenges, managing risk, improving communication, documenting decisions, and leading projects more effectively from concept through completion.
