The Art & Science Behind Beautiful Kitchens: Evidence-based Lighting That Performs
Most homes in America are dramatically underlit—and building codes do little to help. Minimum requirements are astonishingly low (the International Residential Code, for example, requires just one light in a kitchen). While energy mandates now favor high-efficiency LEDs, there is remarkably little guidance on which LEDs to use or, more critically, where to place them. To make matters worse, lighting has long been taught in inconsistent, conflicting, and sometimes simply incorrect ways.
Drawing on more than a decade of original research and volunteer work with both the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), architect Doug Walter presents clear, practical strategies for designing effective residential lighting. Using the latest technologies and illustrated with a dozen award-winning kitchens from across the United States, this session explores the variety of techniques being used successfully.
Attendees will see real-world case studies demonstrating how thoughtful lighting interventions can dramatically improve both the quantity and quality of light. Solutions range from simple lamp replacements to more advanced techniques, including indirect lighting, in-cabinet and toe-kick lighting, valence lighting, surface lighting, backlit slabs, recessed lighting, and daylight-maximizing strategies, all with the same goal: more light, less glare. In class demonstrations of different lighting solutions will make the lesson more real.
The seminar also introduces a simple but powerful demonstration “kit” that any designer can assemble for under $100: a clamp-on light holder paired with lamps of varying lumen outputs, beam spreads, sizes, and color temperatures—that allows clients to experience and select the right light before fixtures are permanently installed, when changes are still easy and affordable.
With wellness as the new frontier in lighting, drawing on research from healthcare and educational environments, the session explores emerging products and technologies that offer unprecedented adjustability and the potential to better support circadian rhythms and overall health in residential settings.
Following the latest NKBA Guidelines (4th & 5th editions I helped write) and IES Recommended Practices (RP-11 and RP-28), attendees will learn how to deliver maximum usable illumination on kitchen work surfaces while minimizing energy use through thoughtful layering of light. From flat eight-foot ceilings to soaring vaulted spaces, from modest updates to major remodels, and from tight budgets to unlimited ones, this session builds confidence in specifying lighting for any scenario.
